The company’s commitment to excellence over the years has been driven by the passion of its founder Arshad Mumtaz, who started THINFILMS, Inc. using his home-built sputtering system.

After graduating from Newark College of Engineering (now called NJIT), he began his career working for companies involved with thin film equipment manufacturing as well as those working with thin films used in the Optical, Semiconductor, and Microwave communication industries. The experience from working in those companies and with the help and advice from a few key people helped launch the company.

In the early years, the bulk of the revenue came from research and development work for engineers from large companies involved with microelectronics. Most of the work has now shifted to standard coatings used in production. The company’s customers (from small and medium-sized companies) have concluded that it makes more sense for them to concentrate on their core business rather than spend their time and resources on something that can be outsourced to a reliable vendor. For large companies, using THINFILMS, Inc. improves quality and value compared to what can be done internally.
