A full-service one-stop-shop Photonics Innovation Hub funded by the European Commission has been launched by PhotoHub Europe.
FREMONT, CA: A consortium of over 50 of Europe's top photonics competence centers has launched a program to train thousands of industry workers in developing and adopting innovative photonics-based solutions to a few biggest challenges of society ranging from environmental sustainability to healthy living and smart infrastructure. The European Photonics Academy will offer training courses with a major focus on hands-on training that will go beyond the lecture room. This academy's training centers will include unique courses around various photonics technology platforms and application domains. They will run for four years with a clear aim of becoming sustainable long-term support to the European industry. The course attendees will gain real-world experience by using state-of-the-art design, test equipment, facilities, and manufacturing.
The interest in photonics is booming. It can be witnessed as the European photonics market is increasing at more than double the rate of global GDP, and the global photonics market is estimated to be valued at 615 billion euros in 2020. Several companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), find it difficult to gain access to the cutting-edge technical know-how, and the hands-on skills required to use photonics technologies remain difficult. PhotoHub Europe launched this academy that is a full-service one-stop-shop Photonics Innovation Hub funded by the European Commission, which will make it easy for SMEs, especially for fully exploiting this essential enabling technology for their various innovation activities.
Prof Peter O'Brien of the UCC Tyndall Institute in Ireland, who leads training support services at the academy, stated that for the first time, the European Photonics Academy has made it easy for SMEs to get the same training course suited for every need as they have a one-stop-shop to pick and choose from a larges menu of training options. He further added that companies could be guaranteed top-quality training for their employees from best-in-class facilities since quality assurance is taken care of in PhotonHub.
