How can the Semiconductor Industry Achieve Sustainability?

Sustainability is an essential aspect that can revitalize the economic aspects of the semiconductor sector while minimizing the environmental loss.

FREMONT, CA: In the past few years, the semiconductor manufacturing industry has been striving to produce more chips that can address the growing market needs. While the chip advancements are contributing to the industries across verticals, the increased development of chips is also adding to environmental wastes and manufacturing expenses. For instance, fabricating a small 2g microchip requires 32 kilograms of water, 1.6 kilograms of petroleum, and 72 grams of chemicals. If we multiply these values by the millions of chips manufactured in just one factory each year, the result will serve evidence for large-scale wastage of water along with the generation of toxic chemicals.

According to Evertiq, the sustainability challenge haunting the semiconductor industry can be addressed by the three ‘Rs,’ namely, reduce, reuse, and recycle. When it comes to the semiconductor industry, these three factors can be highly effective in not only reducing toxic chemicals and the wastage of resources but also encouraging the manufacturers to reuse the existing build materials.

Recycling of manufacturing byproducts in the semiconductor industry is costly as well as difficult. Consequently, most of the industrial wastes would be dumped in landfills. This approach not only requires enormous space but also poses threats to the environment. The only way to address this is by employing advancements in technologies that can ensure the safe and efficient recycling of the electronic equipment. As of now, governments and firms are taking steps to recycle electronic wastes with minimal impact on the environment effectively.

While semiconductor manufacturers are already trying to minimize the use of resources due to its obvious economic reasons, reusability remains largely underutilized. Increasingly, manufacturing firms are reducing wastes sent to landfills by utilizing parts and components that can be reused in any way.

The constant advancements in technology will boost manufacturers’ intent to manufacture semiconductor chips in the future sustainably. The sustainable means of manufacturing will not only bring profits for the semiconductor field but also reduce the negative impacts on the environment.
