It offers best-in-class reliability and isolation performance in opto-couplers, designed with a unique formulation of packaging material and process that sets it apart from other opto-couplers in the market.

DMC-Isolator has flipped the page in opto-couplers, where being the thinnest is a challenge because the larger the component, the more physical insulation is available to safely maintain the large potential difference between the separated systems.

In this instance, the DFN coupler, the offspring of the DMC-Isolator, pushes the physical limits to handle special customer needs where the components currently on the market may not be suitable.

The idea for the product originated from a customer’s demand for an ultra-slim solution due to the prevailing 2mm package thicknesses. CT Micro leveraged its existing DMC patent, known for its schema design benefits, to create the DFN coupler. This product boasts a 1.5mm profile, operates efficiently at temperatures from -55°C to 125°C, and excels at low currents for optimal power use, outperforming conventional opto-coupler designs.

CT Micro’s DFN coupler combines the benefits of coplanar and bottom-up layouts. In the internal structure of the opto-coupler, it locates the LED and phototransistor in one plane, called coplanar. In this case, some reflective material inside the casing ensures the optical coupling. If the LED and phototransistor are installed one below the other, facing each other, it’s called a ‘bottom-up’ construction. The former arrangement’s advantage is that a fixed insulation thickness can be produced, with which high breakdown strength can be achieved, and the noise pressure of the common mode will also be better since, unlike the bottom-up construction, a significantly smaller parasitic capacitance is built up between the input and output. This product enables customers to achieve a new and pioneering solution they believed was impossible with other offerings. Among these customers are prominent German companies like Phoenix Contact, recognized leaders in their field.
