For the semiconductor industry specifically, Birk makes wafer-testing devices that heat the entire wafer of microchips to see the impact of high heat on chips. Fabrication plants that use gases like nitrogen, hydrogen, and argon to manufacture semiconductors use Birk heaters in their capacitance manometers and gauges to calculate the volume of gas throughout the plant to precisely control measurements and testing devices.

A semiconductor customer was struggling with latent failures, often going undetected by inspections. Birk worked with the customer to design failure modes and effects analysis (FEMA) to take out eight solder joints within the part to make it more reliable. In addition to eliminating eight potential failure points, it used less material, less solder, and fewer hand operations. This also reduced the potential risk of using aggressive chemicals for cleaning the parts. By optimizing design and reducing potential failure points, Birk not only improved product reliability but also generated cost savings, strengthening their 20-year partnership with the customer.
