6 July 2022Europe's semiconductor industry has been plagued with chip shortages for a couple of years. The issue was only exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic which disrupted worldwide semiconductor supply chains, precluding the lion's share of players in the market from operating efficiently. Europe's automotive industry, in particular, has been severely affected by the chip shortage. Considering Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the challenges have been accentuated even more as European nations rely on both countries for neon supply, which is essential for the lasers used to develop state-of-the-art chips.According to the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA), Europe's faltering share of global chip manufacturing will drop by two per cent by 2025.
