The primary objective of an AR glass is to create high-quality virtual image and mix with reality scenes without introducing obvious differences to human vision. What enables the AR glass design to obtain its purpose is the embedded optical metrology equipment, which precisely mimics the human eye’s dynamic sensitivity and diverse accuracy to provide the quantised close-loop feedback. That’s why optical metrology equipment needs to contain extreme low stray light to imitate the normal human eye’s sensitivity. However, it can never be achieved without proper lens polishing technology, coating, and right system architecture design and imaging processing algorithm. Same logic applies elsewhere like semiconductor or medical industries.

MLoptic’s proprietary industrial application software makes its systems highly functional, user friendly while enabling incorporation in a wide range of production processes. “We leverage our ever-increasing library of proprietary optical algorithms to provide unique metrology solutions,” states Zhou. The algorithms are modular and can be adapted to varying application requirements and system configurations. Further, its new NIST-traceable, absolute optical calibration capability assists in increasing accuracy and repeatability in its metrology systems. Further, MLoptic provides a suite of photonics products, including mass production inline testers or R&D tabletop instruments measure optical resolution (MTF/ESF/LSF), contrast ratio, NIST traceable colour and brightness, uniformity, human vision geometric sensitivity (binocular angular alignment), imaging processing algorithm.

Fulfilling Every Customer Requirement

Zhou mentions that MLoptic’ssolution maps from semiconductor clean room, fully automated inline-metrology station for AR glass mass production, to R&D table-top instrument with integrated functions, individual optical functional modules and stand-alone imaging processing software. Its application covers the whole AR glass optical chain, from u-LED/OLED display to waveguide to micro-projector to final integrated AR/VR glass optical performance measurement. In a nutshell, MLoptic’s product can improve the general optical display technologies (phones or cars) for better human vision experience and serve silicon on glass, silicon photonics and other novel technology areas. For example, MLoptic’s core capability enables flexible integration of novel technologies to address lacking functional flexibility and high throughput mass production. As a result, a class 1K cleanroom compatible equipment platform can be configured for different optical test modules like MTF, periscope, high-speed colourimeters etc., to dynamically address varied client demands. Johnson (Jiang) He, the R&D Architect and Director at MLOptic, informs, “We facilitate the data quantisation, as well as other industrial optical metrology equipment customised for particular applications, such as interferometer, colorimeter, collimators.”

Enabling Semiconductor Capital Equipment

MLoptic also plays an important role in developing and manufacturing products to meet the needs of semiconductor equipment manufacturing. The company has a dedicated r&d team that continuously designs and optimizes products, such as AOI optical components that provide high-quality digital images and wide field of view, enabling the completion of scan job within short circle time to meet the performance requirements of semiconductor defect detection equipment.” mentions Dr.Zhou. To elucidate, typical testing requirements are completed in house, using our extensive metrology capabilities; many of which have been designed and built by our team.. The semiconductor products are designed and built within ISO 9000/9001 certified processes, “Dr. Zhou added. “In addition, the company has established a DUV/EUV laboratory to develop and produce high transmittance DUV and high reflectivity EUV optical components, which meet the performance requirements of the core optical components of DUV/EUV lithography machine.” Dr. Zhou added.

Enabling Driverless Driving

MLoptic has also been instrumental in architecting products to meet the driverless optical visual performance requirement. The company’s driverless driving products are engineered and optimised to meet driverless optical performance requirements for use in extreme environments such as strong glaring and spectral confusion. “We produce large relative aperture, high transmittance optics to enhance photonic sensitivity, and high resolution, low stray light optics to maximise spectral image quality,” mentions Dr. Zhou. “We have established proprietary processing and manufacturing technology in conjunction with our product development of Lidar, ToF, and VIS camera components and systems for driverless applications.” Standard design considerations include extreme thermal and shock performance. These products meet industry requirements for durability, reliability and stability in the automotive industry. “To elucidate, typical our extensive metrology capabilities; many of which have been designed and built by our team. Automotive products are designed and built within ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 certified processes,” Dr. Zhou adds.

Driven by Quality Engineering

What allows MLoptic to design such robust offerings is its well-defined product development process. The process begins by identifying the problem to be solved—the application is analysed, a conceptual solution is created, and system requirements begin to take shape. Once requirements are defined, a comprehensive feasibility study is conducted to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the conceptual solution and define initial specifications. Following this, a formal development project is initiated. The project is primarily driven by engineering but is supported by all key functions that are integral to a successful product: R&D, metrology/test, quality, reliability, materials management, manufacturing, sales, and field service. “Coordination and oversight is provided by a project manager, who has overall responsibility for the success of the project,” adds Mr. He.

The project manager guides the project through a structured, disciplined development process that includes multiple designs and business reviews to ensure that the fundamental product requirements are met. As the project approaches completion, inputs from operational functions are steadily increased to prepare for production. When all product requirements and specifications are fulfilled, the product is released for serial manufacturing. “Deep application knowledge and the capability to engage with customers across their development spectrum set us apart. We engage with R&D groups to provide customised multi-function, semi-automated tools to support their product design and process development verification,” says adds Mr. He.
